Final Reflections

Reflections:

The timing for the Washington, D.C. trip was ideal. We began the week at Ellis Island where some students were able to locate passenger records of ancestors. We ferried past the Statue of Liberty as so many immigrants did on their passage to Ellis Island and a new life in our country. Emma Lazarus wrote of the Statue of Liberty:

"Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

We watched our Nation’s capital preparing for the festivities of Memorial Day, the day for remembering those who sacrificed their lives for the freedoms we cherish as American citizens.

The children had a chance to witness our government at work. They listened to a senator from New Jersey discussing the level of liability for the oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico. Later they would hear what President Obama had to say at a press conference: “… Malia knocks on my bathroom door and she peeks in her head and she says, 'did you plug the hole yet, Daddy?'" President Obama has been working on this environmental disaster.

Walking in D.C. is like walking through history. The many architectures, statues, documents, and paintings chronicle the birth, hardships, and growth of our nation. Our final destination of Arlington National Cemetery was the ideal location to solemnly reflect on the magnitude of our Nation’s history. Our descent to Colrain Central School was another period of quiet reflection. Let this trip be another remarkable point in your journey of discovering our national history.

I am so incredibly proud of our 6th graders! They were polite, respectful, well-behaved, and an absolute pleasure to take to our nation's capital. Thank you all for entrusting them to me for the week. They would have made you all very proud. They learned to truly work together as a team, helping each other achieve their goals, and make the trip a success for everyone. Some new friendships were forged and others were strengthened. They represented themselves, their families, and Colrain Central School and community with dignity and a fantastic zeal of curiosity. They tried new experiences and learned new things...not only about our nation, but about themselves and each other as well. Well done, Colrain!

May 28 Going home

Our bus was waiting for us; one among many. Even the bus drivers were impressed by the number of tour buses at Arlington.

We left DC by 11am to have a smooth ride back to Colrain. 2 movies, 2 stops for food, lots of snacks, giggling, singing, sleeping. Cheers of hooray as we entered Massachusetts and then to Colrain. We descended Colrain Mountain in silence, reflecting over this amazing week.

Parents & family members were waiting in anticipation as we rolled into Colrain Central School @ 9:00PM on the nose. Mrs. Looman you are truely amazing.

From this "blogger", a huge thank you to all who made this trip possible. Students, parents, grandparents, friends, the Colrain Central School community, the Colrain Community and the Mohawk District for encouraging the exploration of places outside Franklin County.

We have loving, caring, respectful kids. Be proud everyone; they represented us well.

Arlington Cemetery was preparing for its Memorial Day Ceremonies.

American flags, just placed the night before, flickered silently among the sea of over 300,000 graves made from Vermont Marble.

We were taken to see the Kennedy burial site, the eternal flame, and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and the memorial for those who lost their lives in the space shuttle tragedies. We were able to observe the changing of the guard at 10am and the placing of 2 wreaths in honor of people who died serving our country.

As we exited the bus across from the pool where Sophie used to swim, we felt raindrops and heard thunder. Oh, the disappointment when the kids heard they couldn't go in the pool for at least another 30 minutes. Alas, we enjoyed dinner thanks to Tundi; barbecued pork, chicken, ribs, coleslaw, corn bread, salad & watermelon. Finally the thunder stopped and the kids made a bee line to the pool. The chaperones relaxed amongst adult company, recharging for one more day. No longer able to endure the heat & humidity, several chaperones changed into suits and enjoyed the refreshing pool. Mrs. Looman did somersaults in the pool and jumped off the board much to her student's delight.

At 7:30 it was time to get out of the pool. After an ice cream treat and clothes change, the students counted off as they have all week, with a surprise ending...."Thank You Tundy". (Check out the video).

"Home" to the 4-H center, the bus was mellow for a short time, and even the die hards seemed to go to sleep pretty quickly.

We headed to the Air & Space Museum where we had 2 hours to eat and explore the Museum. Good thing we ate first, as the food line had grown exponentially when we exited for the museum. The students were challenged to find the Apollo exhibit and the Wright Brothers exhibit. Definitely a museum to return to. Did you know that the spacesuits from Apollo 11 were 13 layers thick, weighed 250 pounds and cost just short of $13 Million. How many millions per layer is that?

On to the Pentagon for 3Pm where we lined up in ABC order for a strict security check. The young serviceman led us through the "Mall" & hallways & courtyard while walking backward (even down the escalator) and reciting a slew of statistics. For example

23000 people work at the Pentagon; 16000 military personnel & 7000 civilians
Communication wires would go around the world 4 1/2 times
3084 people died on 9/11/01
The Pentagon was repaired in 8 months, under budget

The 6th graders were encouraged to ask questions and they did!

We were led to the Sept. 11 Memorial through halls lined with quilts from around the country, crafted by young students, church groups and skilled quilters. The entrance we came through had 2 beautiful tributes to those that died in 9/11. One with photos of each victim and one with blocks for each victim with stars to represent fallen emergency service people and for military personnel.

We were led through the area that was damaged on 9/11 and on to the Chapel that honors those that lost their lives, military & civilian. Military personnel were awarded the Purple Medal and Civilian victims were award the Medal of Freedom. It was a beautiful and touching site.

After we exited the building and waited for Mrs. Looman to retrieve the metro tickets, our guides left the building in their civilian clothes. We gave them an appreciative round of applause.

To Mrs. Looman's relief we all boarded the Metro at once, in one train and departed also as a group. We were delayed in getting out of the ticket station. Mrs. Tower reflected "We were hobos for about 3 minutes". One of Virginia's finest metro workers let us pass through the gate so other passengers could get to where they needed to go. Whew!

Sadly, we did not have the time to make it back into the city to go to the Holocaust Museum. However, we have all been flexible travelers, and after the disappointment, the kids were excited to hear that our next stop was the pool!

We took the bus to the Sculpture Garden, across from the National Archives. Noticing a line at the Archives, Mrs. Looman took a vote, majority rules. Should we go to the Archives or the American History Museum? The majority voted for the Archives, so after a 30 minute walk through the Sculpture Garden, we crossed the street for an approximately 45 minute wait from the outside of the building to Archive's Rotunda, to see the Declaration of Independence, The Constitution, and the Bill of Rights.

Did you know that in the Declaration of Independence the word "Representatives" is spelled wrong and the word "only" is missing. In the Constitution, Pennsylvania is only spelled with one "n" at the beginning. The government borrowed 15 million dollars to purchase the Louisiana Territory from France to put the national debt at $81 million in 1803.

The 6th graders "went to school" for the whole Mohawk District today, since Franklin County was experiencing the aftermath of an apparent microburst.

We quietly walked past the Vietnam Memorial; some looking for family or aquaintence names (i.e.Bernard Stanley Plaza from Montague, MA & Brian Edward Tierney from Mrs. Bigelow's home town). We noticed diamonds, crosses on the memorial, flowers & flags left at the base of the panels.

We proceeded to the tribute to women, and then to the Korean War Memorial. Noticed the etching, heavy suits, and diverse faces of the soldiers. It is Hot! Lots of water consumption encouraged today.

Cheyenna saved the day for another tourist when she found a neck pouch with credit cards and identification. A call to the phone number on the front and the owner quickly came over to claim her belongings. Good eyes Cheyenna.

4:10pm. We arrived at the National Zoo

We had 2 hours to explore whatever the students were interested in. The pandas were staying cool inside and the orangutans were playing with sheets. The birds were stunning and the students had lots and lots of stories at evening meeting, about both the Zoo and Renwick Gallery.

Since our previous 2 evenings were so late, we decided to order pizza to eat at the 4-H complex. After a relaxing dinner, the 6th graders had a pick up game of soccer and some wheel barrow racing. Other highlights of the day was the finding of Emily G's 6 of diamonds. Thank you Mr. Willis. Mrs. Sullivan found her necklace on the bus that had just been cleaned to perfection by the 6th graders.

We look forward to the Vietnam & Korean Memorials on Thursday. Also, the Bureau of Engraving, the Holocaust Museum, The Air & Space Museum, the Pentagon, a metro ride, Arlington Cemetery, Iwo Jima, and dinner & swimming near Sophie's previous home.

We made it to the U.S. Capitol a 1:30pm tour. After having walked around the Capitol and noticed "Freedom" on top of the Rotunda on the outside, we met up with the Heath students and an indoor version of "Freedom". After a patient wait, we watched an informational movie and were given a tour through Statuary Hall and the Rotunda. We were escorted to the Senate Gallery where we observed an amendment proposal regarding the BP oil spill cleanup.

No students, these are not actors, and no note taking Mrs. Slowinski!

After a snack in the park, we proceeded from the White House to the Renwick Gallery. Walking the sidewalks was like learning a new language. "On the right" means to move left to make room for a jogger or bicyclist.

At the Renwick we found the "Ghost Clock" and were truely amazed that it is carved from a single block of mahogony. There were some interesting photos of the "Glass Dress" and the "Fish Game" deserves a long look. Many budding art enthusiasts may be back one day.

As we walked down to the Lincoln Memorial, our naturalist students enjoyed the community of ducks and ducklings basking in the setting sun. No less than 18 baby ducks and their parents gave the students a break from the brisk pace along the reflecting pool.

On to the Lincoln Memorial that was swarmed with other school groups. We counted and "ran" up the stairs to meet under the "Gettysburg Address" where we recited the address in unison as is traditon from years past.

Lastly the students counted off perfectly and off to Lynn waiting in just the right spot. She is truly amazing.

Mrs. W-S reported that we have walked 11686 steps this Tuesday May 25. That does not count Monday's trip to the Statue of Liberty.

After another 10:00 pm meeting, we will look forward to Wednesday, seeing the White House, the Renwick Gallery, The Capitol, and the National Zoo. Peggy showed us a special gift she hopes to donate to the White House Art Collection on behalf of the Colrain 6th Grade. We hope!

As we explored the World War II Memorial the 6th graders were challenged to find Kilroy within 10 minutes. When we found him he had multiplied. Luckily he showed up where we were to meet to walk down to the Lincoln Memorial.

We hiked to the Washington Monument amongst a myriad of softball games. We alone could field 5 teams, a regular traveling tournament! The kids have been great with 19 chaperones arranging their photo shoots. Notice how the kids can span the width of the Monument.

May 26 The White House

After leaving the 4H center @ 8am, we drove through Embassy row to the White House. Many recognized flags from their World Culture studies. We also passed by the Vice Presidential Mansion and enjoyed Tundi's knowledge of DC to help point out the many sites on the way to the White House.

After pictures outside the White House gates, we proceeded to the gate where Sophie's Uncle met us to lead us to the entry gate. After lining us up in ABC order (thank you for teaching us that Mrs. Agrillo) we had a self guided tour that brought us through the East Wing of the White House. The students learned why some of the East Wing Rooms were named with color names. i.e. "Dolly Red" (Madison). They also learned that the George Washington portrait in the East Room was saved from the fire by Dolly Madison in the early 1800s. Those people that exited first inquired about the weaponry that the secret service was carrying and what qualification one would need to enter the Secret Service.

6th Grade 2010 Chaperones @ the Einstein Statue

We (all of us) climbed the Einstein statue (that is him under all those kids and chaperones), ate dinner and got to the Kennedy Center for a 6 pm show. We enjoyed the National Symphony Orchestra playing with several young musicians. It was described as amazing to not only listen to, but also to watch. Also, the 6th graders were able to search for their country flags while both entering and leaving the Center.

The Museum of Natural History. Wow. We went searching for the Hope diamond, the Ice Man, mummies, insects, fish, the solar system, civilization.......a whole worlds worth of information. Two of us exited at the predetermined time out the wrong exit. Quick call to Mrs. Looman and we decided to walk around the block (& through a botanical garden) rather than go back in through security to go out the front door. phew. Kudos for cell phones.

At 10:30am we met up with the Heath students to tour Ford Theater and the Petersen house. What a wealth of information in the museum below the stage area. The students learned about Lincoln's relationship with Frederick Douglas. They learned of the days leading up to Lincoln's assassination. Mr. P. learned how accessible the President was to the people. We searched for and found the very small weapon that caused such immense harm.

We were disappointed not to have been able to see the traditional reenactment of the assassination in the theater itself. A set was being dimantled so on this day the tradition was put on hold. We did however take this opportunity to rest our tired feet and have a good sit.

We crossed the street to Petersen house to see where Pres. Lincoln died. The students noticed the smallness of the bed (a reproduction we learned) and the fact that only males were in the room taking care of the president. Off to the Old Post Office for lunch.

We walked briskly around the tidal basin and the flight of a great blue heron to the FDR memorial. We were completely impressed by the art, the words, and the accessibility. The artists chose to depict FDR in his wheelchair instead of hiding this fact as was often the case in his life. The word "Patience" was also written in braille as were so many aspects of the memorial. The word "patience" also represents the Colrain Central 2010 travelers.

We started our day with a breakfast buffet @ 7am. The children brought healthy appetites. Plates were loaded with an array of eggs, pancakes, homefries, sausage, bacon, cereals, fresh fruit, yogurt, bagels, and a host of other choices (and coffee for chaperones). Everyone looked rested despite our late night.

As we rode to the tidal basin we looked for embassy flags while Emily counted taxis, 23,24,25,26. Sophie spotted an embassy flag with colors red, yellow and blue.

We had a brisk walk to the Jefferson Memorial in the cool Washington D.C air. Oh how we enjoyed the 75 degree weather. Not too hot, not too cold:)

After enjoying Mrs. Hillman's dinner (Thank you!) at a rest stop in Maryland, we continued down the road to arrive in Washington D.C around 8:30pm. Hooray!

Lynn the busdriver brought us around the beautifully illuminated Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial, World War II Memorial and Jefferson Memorial. Too late and too tired to stop and get off the bus. We'll have to wait to get our pictures tomorrow.

Enjoyed the ride through town that brought us to the 4H Center. After a group meeting, kids were off to bed and lights out by 10:45/11pm.

12:30pm Welcome Heath school! Had great timing to meet Heath & Mrs. Mislak. Off to Ellis Island & the Statue of Liberty. Did you know that a child's head can fit into the nostril of Lady Liberty's nose. Kids looked for answers to the scavenger hunt, researched ancestors, observed the living conditions of immigrants while detained and more.

As we reunited at the base of the Statue of Liberty, the "artist" who inspired the statue filled us in on the artist's point of view and where in DC and Boston to find more of his work.

After a boisterous count off we were back on the ferry @ 3:30pm to head back to the bus.

Departure May 24

Kids counted off to 27 perfectly! All aboard. Drove through Colrain at 6:30am. Smooth ride south to a traffic delay on 684. Long enough for the bus driver to inspect the bathroom and meet the friendly NY drivers. Got rolling and soon passed by a tractor trailor that seemingly experienced a severe fire.

Made tracks to NYC, played the "get to know you" M&M game with our chaperone groups. Ate lunch and disembarked to catch the 12:15pm ferry to Ellis Island.

Here it is...the Friday before the trip! Excitement is high, lists are long, and the packing has begun. This week in school we've spent some time on Google Earth exploring some of the sites of the city. Our classroom experts have filled us in on some of the history of the landmarks we'll be visiting and we are all excited to see, in person, the places about which we've been reading. "Four score and seven years ago..."

In a few short minutes Abraham Lincoln stated these words that have now become known as part of one of the most famous speeches in American history. Today in class we looked at the Gettysburg Address and the kids all noted that President Lincoln was quite wrong when he stated that "the world will little note, nor long remember what we say here". The words of this "little noted" speech are inscribed on the wall of the Lincoln Memorial which we will recite together when we are standing there next week. Reading the Gettysburg Address aloud at the Lincoln Memorial is a long-standing Colrain tradition that we are excited to continue.

Holocaust Museum

We have just finished reading Daniel's Story by Carol Matas (book review). We read this as a part of a unit on Europe during the time of the Holocaust. When we are in Washington, D.C. in May, we will be going to the exhibit Remember the Children: Daniel's Story at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. This is always a sobering look at this dark period of our world's history. Students were moved by the courage and tenacity of people who lived through that experience. Seeing the exhibit in person will help students gain a greater appreciation for the importance of kindness and respect.

World Cultures and World Architecture
Europe has given us many things....good food, breathtaking art, many of our fairy/folk tales, and some amazing architecture. One of the things we will be on the lookout for in D.C. is the Grecian influence on architecture. We will be taking note of the different kinds of pillars and columns used on the grandest buildings in our nation and recognizing that they had their roots in the great buildings and designs of Greece.

Taking a ride down Embassy Row is an adventure for us. Students will be searching for the embassy of the country that they have researched, studied, and written a report about. It is here that they are able to begin to grasp the reality that Washington, D.C. is not just our nation's capital, but a city of great importance worldwide.

On the Washington, D.C. front, students are beginning to research various sights in the city that we are likely to visit. Everyone drew a number that corresponded with a particular sight. They are/will be given some time in school to work on this, but should certainly be working on it outside of school as well. The main questions I have asked them to consider are: What is the history of this point of interest? Why do you think we visit it? What other interesting information can you find about it? They do not have to write a formal report on it, but should be able to share their information with the class and answer questions about it.

The students have chosen their landmark/monument/point of interest and the excitement has begun. Each student is responsible to research a sight in Washington, D.C. and become the class expert on that important place. Over the next month and a half, we will be examining some of the places we may encounter on our trip and learning all we can about them before we get to see them in person.

The itinerary is beginning to take shape. I am working together with the 6th grade teacher from Heath Elementary School to coordinate those places that we will visit together. Seeing our nation's capitol together will help students from both schools create some new friendships that will likely carry over as they enter Mohawk together.

At some point in late April or early May we will be having a mandatory meeting for all students and a parent to review all the rules and expectations of the trip. I will keep you posted as to when that will occur.

The countdown is on!

Trip Meetings

Chaperones - The first meeting of the parent chaperones will be Thursday, April 1, 2010 at 6:30 pm in the 6th grade room. It's really important that everyone make it if at all possible.

The second chaperone meeting is scheduled for Thursday, April 29, 2010 at 6:30 pm in the 6th grade room.

Students - There will be a mandatory meeting with Mrs. Looman for all students on Wednesday, May 5, 2010 at 6:30 pm in the 6th grade room. This meeting must be attended by all students and a parent/guardian representative. During this meeting we will review all of the expectations and procedures for the trip You will also receive a packet of forms that must be completed and returned by Monday, May 10, 2010. You will also receive a packing list and other critical information.
